My photo series is a display of the transition from love to heartbreak. To show the gradual transition, my series begins with very vibrant and colorful photos, and at the fifth photo, where the transition begins, the color starts to fade away until it becomes completely black and white and darkens until the end of the series. This symbolizes the true feeling of heartbreak in a relationship. The relationship begins with a happy couple and as the relationship starts to break and fade, so does the color spectrum.
Compositionally, I used techniques such as the rule of thirds, filling the frame, leading lines, centering the dominant eye, symmetry, and contrast between the foreground and background. These photos are of interest to me because I did not want to choose a basic subject to photograph. I wanted to take on a different conceptual perspective and tell a story with my photography. I feel that I was successful in telling a story and that my work, ending with a cliffhanger, will make my audience wonder and want to know what will happen next. The subject of my series could be classified as romance or relationships. My photos are about the transition from love to heartbreak. The message of the series touches upon how a couple can be happy and in love one minute, and within the next their relationship can fall apart, simultaneously tearing the individuals apart. The series depicts the anger, depression, and stress that comes with a breakup. The series ends with a letter to leave the audience wondering what will happen, and to show the rollercoaster of emotions that one goes through during a breakup. I used the same lens in every photo, however I did utilize the camera'a zoom, high shutter speed, and manipulate the focal point of the image. The alternative process I used in my series is black and white. I made the photos that depict heartbreak black and white to show the lifelessness of the individuals and how, without each other, the color is gradually sucked out of their lives. The coloring begins as vibrant when they are happy and in love, then the next photos gradually have a lower vibrance until the photos are in black and white and darken with each image.
In photoshop, I edited and manipulated my photos a great deal. My house was my only available place to photograph, however, the background of the photos were very busy and colorful and there was nothing I could change in my house, so i changed it in photoshop. Not only does a busy background distract the audience's eye from the focus of the photo, but it makes the photo look too lively, and for the heartbreak portion of my series, I wanted the photos to carry a depressed and lifeless emotion; so, I photoshopped out the busy background to make it a plain wall. In photoshop, I also manipulated the color balance, saturation, vibrance, and made photos black and white. The love portion of the series I made more vibrant to show the love and liveliness, and for the heartbreak portion I lowered the vibrance until it was entirely black and white and then it grew darker with each photo. I also cropped some of my photos to get rid of excess background or to center the dominant eye of one of my models.
As a photographer, I want my work to be different, creative, and to convey a message to my audience in whatever way applies to the specific photo or series. Photography is important to me because it allows me to express myself and be creative in a way I never have before. With photography, I am able to compose an image and edit it exactly how I want to and I have freedom to convey any message I desire to.
